What is packaging?

Packaging is a word you often come across on the HB RTS website, but what is packaging? What types of packaging are there? And what is reusable packaging? We answer all these questions.

Emballage, a French word

Emballage is French for "packaging." In the logistics world, this term is often used when referring to crates, boxes, pallets, roll containers, buckets, etc. In short, everything that is used to transport goods so that they arrive undamaged and safely at the customer's location.

The different types of packaging

On our website, we talk about packaging, logistics resources, RTIs (Returnable Transport Items), and load carriers. In fact, all these terms mean the same thing, with a few minor differences. For example, many companies consider a dolly or roly to be a load carrier, but a CBL crate to be packaging.

When it comes to RTIs, the R is particularly important: Returnable means reusable. Not all packaging is reusable, but all RTIs are, by definition, reusable.

The difference between reusable and single-use packaging

In the logistics world, many single-use packaging items, such as cardboard boxes and plastic bags, are used every day. These are thrown away after the products have been received. This is anything but sustainable and certainly does not comply with the principles of the circular economy.

That is why we at HB RTS only offer reusable packaging. Reusable packaging can be cleaned and reused countless times. What's more, it is fully recyclable at the end of its long service life. The more often you use a specific packaging item, the more sustainable it becomes.
